Sow under cover in spring, and plant out after the last frost. Or direct sow when the weather and soil have warmed. They absolutely do not tolerate a frost or the cold, so protect them from cold nights. Zinnias prefer to be sown directly over having root disturbance or becoming root-bound in a cell. If sowing in modules, be extra gentle when planting them out and don't leave it too late. Pot on if necessary.
