Silene Pinks (red campion)
So easy to grow, and being a perennial, it returns year after year. Red Campion is actually pink- really pink. It makes a lovely floral filler in late spring and early summer. They arrive when flowers are most needed in the May gap, and therefore are incredibly useful to have in your cut flower garden. With their dainty, pink petals on long elegant stems, the flowers look like they flutter. The pods once the petals fall are a smoky purple and provide lovely texture in designs. Keep harvesting and it flowers solidly for a couple months, giving stem after stem to be tucked into bouquets. They lend a very pretty, relaxed and joyful presence in any design. We love to grow it alongside our foxgloves- they make a perfect pairing.
The bees love it.

Sow under cover in autumn, planting out in spring to flower that year. Or direct sow in spring to flower in later summer. They benefit from darkness, so cover with compost. They like the fluctuating temperatures of autumn to germinate. Chill them in the freezer then give them a little heat from a mat or indoors. Once germination has occurred, let them grow on in cooler temperatures. Plants will overwinter and flower even earlier the following year.
